Trojans Prep for NWAC Championships
Everett, WA - The track and field regular season has concluded and 18 EvCC athletes have qualified with several others that still have a chance at getting entered. The two-day Championship meet will be held May 18-19 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, OR and will feature the best track and field athletes that the NWAC has to offer. Its been an electric year in the conference with two all time records getting broken in the women's 100m and in the men's 4x100m relay. Everett track and field has had their shining moments as well. Freshman Alexander Rabena has top 10 program marks in the 200m (6th) and 400m (5th), sophomore Justice Funston has the 6th best pole vault mark, and freshman Avery Brennan has the 4th furthest hammer throw mark. For the women, freshman Sophia Michalopoulos has top 15 marks int he 100m (8th), 200m (11th) and the long jump (3rd). Sophomore Madeline Dang has top times in both hurdle events, 100m hurdles (5th) and 400m hurdles (5th). And the 4x100m relay team has the 6th fastest time in program history, set by Haddyjatou Ceesay, Kassandra Simms, Kamarrie Spencer, and Sophia Michalopoulos.
Several Trojans look to earn spots on the podium at the championships and a few will have a chance at All American Honors by finishing in the top 3 within their respective events. On the men's side Hector Mendoza has the 9th ranked NWAC time in the 3000m steeplechase, Ilya Grabovskiy has the 8th ranked NWAC discus mark, Justice Funston has the 9th ranked pole vault, Avery Brennan has the 9th ranked hammer mark, and Alexander Rabena will fight for a spot in the top three in the 400m. His season best is currently ranked 4th and just two one hundredths of a second behind 3rd.
For the women, Sophia Michalopoulos is ranked 7th in the 100m and 5th in the long jump, Taya Kilgore and Heidi McKinley rank 7th and 10th respectively in the 10,000m, and Teagan Pentz is ranked 4th in the 5,000m. Madeline Dang has the best shot at All American honors, currently ranked 3rd in the 100m hurdles and the 4x100m relay team could crack the top three, currently ranked 5th.
