Everett, WA – The Everett Community College women's volleyball team picked up a hard-fought home victory on Thursday night, defeating the Columbia Bible College Bearcats (Canada) in four sets (16-25, 25-22, 25-12, 25-23) at the Walt Price Center in front of a solid crowd.
After dropping the opening set, the Trojans bounced back behind a balanced offensive attack. Freshman outside hitter Reinna Mostrales powered the team with 14 kills and four service aces, finishing with a match-high 18 points. Sophomore Maya Gaudia added 10 kills and chipped in on the block with two assists, while Katie Burkholder was steady on both sides of the ball with three kills and three aces.
Setter Taylor Holland directed the offense with 13 assists and also picked up two aces, while libero Natalie Spelman anchored the defense with 17 digs. As a team, Everett tallied 11 aces and out-dug the Bearcats 49–47.
Columbia Bible College came out strong behind the play of Brinay Burdick (8 kills, 11 points) and Jill Barkey (7 kills, 9 digs), taking the first set and pushing the Trojans to the wire in the fourth. But Everett's efficiency improved as the match went on, hitting .304 in the third set and .226 in the decisive fourth frame.
The win will boost the teams confidence heading into the NWAC North Region Crossover Tournament, hosted by EvCC. Everett will play four matches in two days starting with Umpqua Community College, Friday morning at 9am and then will play Spokane Colleges Sasquatch immediately afterwards. EvCC has found themselves on the short end of several close matches in on conference play, but the win tonight over a solid squad from Canada and a strong showing at the crossover tournament will give EvCC all they need to be prepared for north region play to begin later this month.
