Everett Volleyball Opens Season with Grit at WCC Tournament
The Everett Community College women's volleyball team opened the 2025 season in Bellingham at the WCC Pavilion this past weekend, gaining valuable experience for a freshman heavy roster against a tough slate of opponents. The Trojans went 1-3 over the two-day tournament, highlighted by a straight-set victory over Pierce to close the weekend.
Day One
Everett started Friday with a noon matchup against Yakima Valley. Despite strong hitting percentages in the first and third sets from Reinna Mostrales (8 kills, .217) and Katie Burkholder (5 kills), the Trojans couldn't keep pace with Yakima's balanced attack and fell in three sets (16-25, 24-26, 14-25).
The Trojans rebounded quickly in their second match of the day, pushing Chemeketa to five sets in a back-and-forth battle. Everett opened strong, taking the first set 25-17 behind efficient setting from Taylor Holland (31 assists, 13 digs) and timely kills from Burkholder (13 kills) and Mostrales (10 kills). After dropping the next two sets, the Trojans forced a decisive fifth with a 25-19 win in set four. Chemeketa held on late, however, edging Everett 15-8 in the final frame.
Day Two
Saturday's opener pitted Everett against perennial NWAC contender Highline. After a slow start, the Trojans showed fight in a narrow 25-27 second set before ultimately falling in three (15-25, 25-27, 11-25). Mostrales once again paced the attack with 9 kills, while Holland dished out 21 assists.
Everett saved its best for last, sweeping Pierce in commanding fashion (25-13, 25-16, 25-22) to close the weekend. The Trojans hit .423 in the second set and .250 overall, their most efficient offensive outing of the tournament. Balanced contributions across the lineup—including steady serving from Holland (2 aces), strong defense from Amara Williams (8 digs), and a team total of 5 service aces—secured the first win of the season.
Looking Ahead
The Trojans' will regroup for a tournament this coming weekend in Pasco at the Coach G Memorial Invitational on the campus of Columbia Basin College. Everett will match up against Carroll College's JV team, Wenatchee Valley College and Rogue CC. Both Wenatchee and Rogue were playoff teams a season ago, that reached the top 12. Matches will be streamed live on nwacsportsnetwork.com.
