EVERETT, WA – Facing one of the top teams in the North Region, the Everett Community College women's basketball team showed determination Wednesday night but ultimately fell 68-42 to second-place Skagit Valley at Walt Price Fitness Center.
The Cardinals entered the contest with a 8-1 record in North Region play and demonstrated why they are among the conference's elite. Still, the Trojans competed hard from the opening tip, trailing just 16-15 after a tightly contested first quarter. Everett's defense kept the visitors uncomfortable early, forcing several tough shots and staying within striking distance.
The second quarter proved to be the turning point. Skagit Valley used its size and efficiency inside to slowly build separation, outscoring the Trojans 10-5 to take a 26-20 lead into halftime. Despite shooting struggles, Everett continued to battle on the defensive end and remained within reach.
Everett was led offensively by sophomore guard Jordan Hentel, who delivered a strong all-around performance with a team-high 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, and an impressive six steals. Kaila Oudom added eight points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers, while Myah Galdeira contributed six points, three assists, and three steals. Off the bench, Kelsee Hunt provided a spark on the boards with six rebounds and three points.
Skagit Valley pulled away in the second half behind solid performances from Grace Trichler and Allie Heino. Trichler finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Heino added 14 points and nine boards to help the Cardinals control the paint. Skagit Valley outrebounded Everett 45-27 and shot 44.8 percent from the field, key factors in extending their lead.
Despite the final margin, the Trojans never stopped competing. Everett forced 17 Skagit Valley turnovers and collected 11 steals, highlighted by Hentel's defensive effort. The difference came on the offensive end, where the Trojans struggled to find their rhythm, shooting 25.9 percent overall and 3-for-23 from three-point range.
The loss moves Everett to 7-17 overall and 3-7 in North Region play. But the Trojans are not out of the playoff hunt yet. The Trojans will look to regroup and take on Olympic College on Saturday, a must win game to keep EvCC's playoff hopes alive. Tip off is set for 4pm on Larry Walker Court.
