Everett, WA - Women's basketball tipped off the 29th annual Women's Basketball Classic last weekend, coming away with a win over Portland Community College and gaining valuable experience for the freshman heavy team.
After falling to Spokane on the first day, Everett bounced back defeated Portland 55-52. The Panthers defense held Everett to just six first quarter points on 3 of 19 shooting, but EvCC found their touch in the second quarter, outscoring PCC 18-10 in large part to solid shooting from behind the arc.
Coming out of the break with the three point lead, the Trojans created separation in the third, led by Myah Galdeira's 8 points. The Trojans scored 24 points, their highest scoring quarter of the season so far. This built the Everett lead to as many as 20 halfway through the 3rd quarter. But the Panthers would battle back and cut the deficit to 12 heading into the 4th.
Sophomore Selena Gomez opened up the 4th with a corner three, but from there Portland would go on a 14-2 run cutting the lead to three, before EvCC was able to get their first field goal in nearly seven minutes of action. Over the final two minutes Everett's defense did enough to hold off PCC and secure the second win of the season.
Jordan Hentel played all 40 minutes, scoring 12 points and dishing out 7 assists. Myah Galdeira led all scorers with 15 points, and also had 7 rebounds to go with 7 steals.
