Bellingham, WA — The Everett Trojans men's basketball team opened their season Wednesday evening with a road matchup against Whatcom at the WCC Pavilion. In a high-energy, back-and-forth contest, the Trojans battled with grit and resilience but ultimately fell 94–88 in overtime.
Everett showed toughness from the opening tip, matching Whatcom score for score throughout the first half. Strong interior play and disciplined execution allowed the Trojans to head into halftime tied at 33–33, setting the tone for what would become a tightly contested defensive battle.
That momentum carried into the second half, as neither team was able to create separation, though there was slightly more scoring with 41 points scored apiece at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Trojans continued to compete, scoring 14 points in the extra period, but Whatcom capitalized at the free-throw line to secure the win. Despite the result, Everett's season opener showcased a team capable of contending, highlighted by rebounding dominance, depth, and balanced contributions across the roster.
Darious Turner delivered a standout performance, pouring in a game-high 28 points on an efficient 10-of-14 shooting, including a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. Turner's lights-out shooting provided Everett with a reliable offensive anchor and kept constant pressure on the Whatcom defense in critical moments.
Noah Parker added a strong all-around effort, recording a double-double with 15 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. His presence on the glass helped Everett dominate the rebounding battle, 42–26, a key factor in forcing overtime. Anthony Najera provided a spark off the bench, finishing with 14 points, nine rebounds, and a blocked shot while bringing energy and toughness on both ends of the floor. Bubba Palacol logged 42 minutes and contributed 16 points, three assists, and two steals, while Turner also made an impact defensively with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Ro'Darius Bryant led the Trojans in scoring with 28 points, a career high, going 10-14 from the field and also making 6-7 free throws.
Everett will need to bounce back quickly as they take on a strong 14-2 Bellevue team this Saturday. The Bulldogs have won 14 straight games after starting the season 0-2. Tip off will be at 2pm.
